The Polonia Theater was founded by the Krystyna Janda Foundation for Culture in 2005, in a building of the former Polonia cinema. It is located at 56 Marszałkowska Street, at the corner of Piękna St., near Konstytucji Square. The artistic director of the Polonia Theater is Krystyna Janda.
The first premiere on the Small Stage of Polonia Theater – “Stefcia Ćwiek w szponach życia [Eng: In the jaws of life]” by D. Ugrešić – took place on October 29, 2005, followed by a second one just a month later – “Ucho, gardło, nóż [Eng: Ear, throat, knife]” – a monodrama performed by Krystyna Janda based on V. Rudan’s book of the same title. The Big Stage activity was inaugurated with the premiere of “Three Sisters”. In 2005, Polonia Theater’s Little “Bluestocking” Stage became active, with the name taken from the nineteenth-century French feminist movement. Until the end of 2007, Polonia Theater produced as many as 20 premieres, of which nearly half still remain in the repertoire.
Although Polonia Theater does not employ actors on a permanent basis, it has managed to achieve a tremendous success in box-office – it is visited by about 250,000 viewers annually. Since summer 2007, selected performances can be seen for free in the open air – at Konstytucji Square and in front of Och-Teatr theatre at Grójecka St. Every year these summer shows gather the audience of around 10-15 thousand.
